Must Know List About Insurance & Billing

  1. Second opinion: If you feel stuck during your conversations with your hospital, I suggest to get an opinion from another hospital. When my hospital was not able to provide a definitive answer about billing, I had a meeting with an accounting manager in another hospital. He was super sharp and knowledgeable. He gave me a very clear response about billing and expensing, and encouraged me to push my hospital's finance department.

  2. Breathing machine: Oxygen support is one of the most important indicators when the doctors assign a grade for your baby's case hence the highest contributor to total cost.

  3. Incubator stay: Some insurance companies do not cover the incubator cost so it is best to check.

  4. Baby's insurance card: Mom's insurance usually covers for baby's expenses in the first 30 days of life. In the meantime, you are expected to issue an ID and then an insurance card for your baby.

  5. Night stay pre-discharge: We as a family spent a night in a hospital room the day before our discharge. It was the best thing our NICU family offered us. If it is not covered by your insurance and if you have the means, I highly recommend this worrisome yet incredible experience.

  6. Vaccination: RSV vaccine is highly recommended for extreme premature babies and it is usually covered for babies born under 32 weeks. Best to check as it is an expensive vaccine in UAE.
